Will it get the nut off your bolt?

Four figures that answer it before you buy.

4splitters
One for each size band, so you are not forcing the wrong ring onto a nut
9-27mm
The full span across the flats that the four cover between them
0threads lost
The tip stops at the nut, so the bolt underneath comes out reusable
0sparks
Cold cutting, which matters near fuel lines, paint, rubber and wiring

The nut comes off. The bolt stays.

A nut that has been out in the weather for ten years is not coming off with penetrating oil and patience. This puts a hardened tip against one flat and winds it in until the nut cracks in half. The bolt underneath keeps its thread, which is the difference between a new nut and a new part.

Same seized nut, two ways off

One of them takes the bolt with it.

Grinder, heat and hope Without

Grinder, heat and hope

Sparks onto the paint, a cut that runs into the thread, and a bolt you now have to drill out. On a suspension arm or near a fuel line it is not a job you want to start at all.

Split it, lift it off, move on With the splitter

Split it, lift it off, move on

The ring goes over the nut, the screw winds in, the nut cracks. Two halves come away in your hand and the bolt is still good for a new nut.

What does the cutting

Four things worth knowing before it goes under the car.

Hardened Cutting Tip

Run harder than the nut it is biting into, and shaped as a wedge so the crack spreads across the flat instead of digging a hole.

Forged 40CR Body

The ring takes everything the screw pushes against. Forged alloy steel holds its shape there where cast metal would spread and let go.

Black Screw Rod

A coarse hardened thread you drive with an ordinary wrench, so the force builds slowly and you can feel the nut let go.

Four Sizes In A Case

Each size only fits its own band, so the case is how you find the right one under a car instead of trying all four.

Where a socket has already given up

The nuts that turn a one-hour job into a whole afternoon.

Exhaust and suspension

Exhaust and suspension

The bolts that have been through ten winters of salt and will not turn at all.

Outdoor and marine fixings

Outdoor and marine fixings

Gate hinges, trailer frames and dock hardware that live in the weather.

Machinery and farm gear

Machinery and farm gear

Mower decks and implements where the nut is rusted solid onto a shaft you need to keep.

Nuts already rounded off

Nuts already rounded off

Once the flats are gone a socket has nothing to grip. This does not need them.

Why not just cut it off with a grinder?

Fair question, and the last row is the honest answer.

Angle grinder or hacksaw

  • The cut usually runs into the thread
  • Not near fuel lines, paint or rubber
  • Needs space to swing a disc
  • Grinding dust over everything below
  • Neither, just use a wrench

Seized Nut Splitter Set

  • Comes out clean and reusable
  • Cold, no sparks, no scorched paint
  • Fits roughly where a ring spanner fits
  • Two halves of a nut in your hand
  • Slower than a wrench, so save it for the stuck ones

Turned with the wrench already in your hand

There is no handle to lose and no special driver to buy. The screw head is a plain hex, so a spanner, a socket and bar, or a ratchet all work. That also means you control how hard it goes in, and you feel the moment the nut cracks rather than finding out afterwards.

Three moves, start to finish

No power tools, no sparks, no drilling anything out afterwards.

Pick the size that just clears
1
First

Pick the size that just clears

Measure across the flats and take the band it falls in. A ring that is too big lets the nut move and the tip skate off.

Seat it and wind the screw in
2
Then

Seat it and wind the screw in

Line the tip up square on one flat, then turn steadily with a wrench. Grease on the thread makes this a lot easier.

Crack it and lift it away
3
Finally

Crack it and lift it away

You hear it go. Back the screw out, split the second side if the nut is thick, and the halves come off the bolt.

Measure across the flats, not across the corners. The four bands are 9 to 12 mm, 12 to 16 mm, 16 to 22 mm and 22 to 27 mm, which in imperial runs from about 3/8 inch up to a little over 1 inch. Pick the band the nut falls in rather than the next size up.

Used properly, no. The tip is meant to stop at the base of the nut, so the thread underneath survives and takes a new nut afterwards. Wind it in steadily and stop when you hear the nut crack rather than driving on past it.

A few things worth knowing before you order. The nut is destroyed, always, so have a replacement ready. Turn it by hand only, because an impact wrench or a drill will bend the screw head long before the nut gives. The ring also has to go over the nut and sit square, so a nut pulled tight into a recess or flush against a plate is a job for a grinder. And on a very thick or a high-grade hardened nut you may need to split both sides, or get heat into it first.

Any spanner, socket or ratchet that fits the hex on the screw head. A longer bar gives you more leverage on a stubborn one, which is usually better than swinging harder on a short one.
